I was raised a grassroots Republican. My family always said do for yourself and hopefully the government will not get in the way. I still believe this today, that the government should not stand in the way of people realizing their dreams.
The challenge with today's elections is simply extremism. You see, there needs to be a balance in our society. The playing field needs to be level for people to realize their dreams.
What does it mean today to be a Republican? Well, I think we have to look at how the Republicans see the United States. We are in a jungle, and in a jungle, only the strong survive. I don't have to run faster than the oncoming lion, I just have to run faster than you. I will kick, scratch and claw my way to the top and never look down because I have no intention of descending from mount high. It is my money, I earned it and if I want to pay for something I will so the government should not make that choice for me. I don't care about my fellow man because it is a jungle and if they do not want to hunt, they will die. It is black and white.
This is all nice and idealistic, it is not realistic. As I have gotten older, I realize that this system does not work for one simple reason. There is always someone bigger, faster and stronger. Not that I would run from a fight, I would just want the fight to be fair.
For all the Tea Partiers out there, you need to really take a look around and see who is being played. Has the Tea Party helped you in any way to get health care, insurance or a job? No, in fact, the people that you are supporting are relying on one simple fact. That is you take care of the top, it will eventually trickle down to the bottom. That's where you are, on the bottom. You are waiting for the scraps to be sent down your way so that you can survive. You think you can get out and make it on your own. And, most likely you can. What you need to look at is the laws that are in place that allow you to make it on your own.
Example: If it where not for Robinson-Pachtman, which is part of the Sherman Antitrust, a small retailer would not be able to compete with a multi-national conglomerate such as Walmart. This law establishes a pricing and deal structure that is fair and balanced. These laws were put in place to level the playing field.
You can vote for less government, lower taxes and everything else the Tea Party is selling. My suggestion to you is to look at what you are buying. You had better be the fastest, strongest and wealthiest one to survive in their system. This is what Paul, O'Donnell, Angel, Paladino et al support.
I still consider myself a Republican, a moderate one at that, and hopefully our party will see that they have been hijacked by the extreme and reject this radical agenda for one that supports all. Until then, I for one will be voting Democrat.
